The Final of the 2017 Pennant series was held at Victoria Golf Club on Sunday August 6th, as the two best teams from the preliminary series, “High, Soft & Fat”, and “Drive For Show, Putt For Dough” went head to head to determine this year’s winners.
The weekend’s weather forecast was for blizzard conditions for Sunday, so both teams assembled on the Saturday for a practice round at Victoria in very windy conditions before checking into the clubhouse and dinner. The two teams had not previously met in the lead up to the final, but all members were very relaxed about the next day’s events as the enjoyed a magnificent 3 course dinner, a few beers and spirits, later sat down to watch the footy in the lounge, and finished a late night off with a few games of pool before retiring for the night.
Early rain greeted the boys over breakfast, with HS&F quickly out of the blocks for bacon and eggs washed down with a few latte’s. A little slower out of their rooms were DFSPFD about 30 minutes later, and this slow start would later be reflected on the fairways and greens on the front 9. Still, both teams found time to hit the practice fairway and putting green before gathering on the first tee, which at Victoria is the 2nd hole. A quick group photo for both teams, and we were away.
At the turn, HS&F lead 3 contests to 1. Bertone is 4 Up, Wilson & Greenwood both 2 Up, & Withers for DFSPFD is holding his team together being 1 Up. Fair to say to this point, the boys from DFSPFD have their work cut out for them to get back into the match.
Besides a bit of a hiccup on the 10th, the lads from DFSPFD worked their way back into the match to make it a very nerve-racking last few holes. A couple of great shots, and not-so-great shots, plus a few clutch putts ended the day at 2 matches each, with contests and holes all even too! It couldn’t be any closer! It came down to the Captains Match result to determine this years champions, with High, Soft & Fat prevailing.
A big congratulations to the boys from High, Soft & Fat who are the 2017 Social Golf Club Pennant Champions.
Many thanks to all 24 teams who competed in the 2017 Pennant Series. It was a very enjoyable competition from the outset.
We will be back again next year with another Pennant Series, so stay tuned for our 2018 competition entry.
