SUNDAY 30th APRIL
For the third Pennant round in a row, great weather greeted the field at Eagle Ridge for the final round of the preliminary series. The course was in superb condition following plenty of rain in the lead-up week. With every team still a mathematical chance to make the next round, competition was fierce. The best performed teams on the day were the ‘Sandbelt Saints’ & ‘Every Hole’s a Goal’ winning all 4 contests for a clean sweep. This was Every Holes’s a Goal’s first match win for the series and elevated them from the bottom 8 into 9th position overall on the ladder. ‘Sandbelt Saints’ moved up to 2nd with their second consecutive match win. Unfortunately, for ‘Under Pressure’ and ‘Never Up, Never In’, it meant they were pushed down into 18th & 22nd respectively.
Other teams winning 3 contests on the day were the consistent ‘Sultans of Swing’, ‘Thinittowinit’, ‘Chelsea Heights Red’ and ‘Ken Dodd’s Dog’s Dead’ who all remained undefeated for the series. ‘High, Soft & Fat. ‘Shag Bags’ and ‘Team Vision’ were the other well performed teams for the round winning three contests and confirming their spot in the final 16. High, Soft & Fat remain the only team to win all 3 matches in the preliminary rounds. ‘Drive for Show, Putt for Dough’ who only won one contest in Round 1 at Sandhurst, finished the competition well winning their last 2 matches. At Eagle Ridge they managed to just get over the line with 2.5 contest wins to finish 7th on the table overall.
Two of the matches were squared on the day. The ‘NOB’s’ who were last on the table before this week and only finished 2 contests out of the final 16, squared their game with ‘Voltaradol’ who had previously won both their matches. ‘Voltaradol’ went from 2nd on the table to 5th as a result. The other squared game was between ‘SGCC’ and ‘Fergy’s Fantastic Five’. Interestingly, both team went through the series undefeated, ‘SGCC’ winning one match and tying two, and FFF squaring all three of their matches to get through in 14th position.
Three teams lost their final match, but still had enough points in the bank to get them through. ‘The Woodsmen’, like ‘Fergy’s Fantastic Five’ never won a match outright, but still prevailed in 15th position. ‘Team Titlelost’ got through by the skin of their teeth into 16th position, and ‘Club Bogey’ fell to 13th on the table. ‘Chelsea Heights Blue’ won’t be joining their other team in the final 16 having been tipped out to 17th position and could consider themselves unlucky after a good win at Eynesbury in Round 2. Last year’s eventual winners, ‘3 Righty’s and 1 Lefty’ must have suffered from a little bit of premiership hangover not winning any of their 3 matches this year. After a halved game in Round 1 at Sandhurst, they couldn’t repeat their heroics of 2016 over the next 2 rounds finishing in 19th position.
‘Hackers United’ having halved their first match at Sandhurst failed to win another match. ‘The Megg’ likewise got a halved match at Eynesbury in Round 2 and lost their other two matches, and ‘Red Aces’ unfortunately went down in all 3 of their games.
For the remaining 16 teams, we wish you all the best in Round 4 at Settlers Run on May 28.
